THE Traditional Medicine Practice Council (TMPC) as the statutory institution of the Ministry of Health (MoH), mandated by the Traditional Medicine Practice Act 2000, Act 575 is not relenting in its determination to brand and create a respectable image for Traditional and Alternative Medicine (TAM) practice in Ghana.
TMPC which commenced full scale regulatory activities in September 2007, is further not relenting in its efforts to change numerous misconceptions about TAM.
Torgbuiga Yaka IV, as the Registrar for TMPC, offers visionary leadership and mentorship to a team of dedicated staffers to shape and brand TAM, as envisaged under Act 575 and as a result to promote TAM to an acceptable standards and thus enhanced public confidence in the services.
A department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine was created in the Ministry of Health in 1992.
Traditional Medicine has since been incorporated into the program of work plans of the Agency of Health.
The Traditional Medicine Practice Act (Act 575) was promulgated in 2000 to control and regulate Traditional medicine practice. Although the Traditional Medicine Practice Council was not constituted, the secretariat for the council was set up in 2004 in other to adequately prepare the ground for the Council.
The Traditional Medicine Practice Council was eventually constituted and inaugurated on the 9th April, 2010.This event has now fully set the stage for the legal promotion, education, development, regulation and control of Traditional & Alternative Medical Practice in Ghana.

Mission Statement
To promote, control, train and regulate Traditional and Alternative Medal Practices by formulation, implementation, co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes and thereby contributing to the national development agenda.
The key functions of the Agency include the following:
- The object of the council is to promote, control, and regulate traditional Medicines
- Set standards for the practice of Traditional and Alternative Medicines.
- Issuance of a certificate of registration to qualified practitioners and license premises for practice.
- Promote and support training in traditional and alternative medicine
- Determine and enforce code of ethics for Traditional and Alternative Medicine practice in conjunction with association of Traditional Medicine Practitioners recognized by the Minister responsible for Health.
- To promote, supply, import & export of herbal.
- Approve in consultation with educational and research institutions determined by the Board the curriculum for training institutions and also for continuing education in Traditional and Alternative Medicine practitioners.
- Collaborate with the Ministry to establish centres for provision of Traditional Medical care within the national health care delivery system.
- Collaborate with the appropriate agencies for large scale cultivation of medicinal plants and for the preservation of bio-diversity.
- Advise the Minister On Matters relating to and affecting the practice of traditional and Alternative Medical Practice
- Advise Food and Drugs Authority On rules for the registration, advertisements, manufacture, packaging, preparation, labeling, sale, supply, exportation, and importation of herbal medicines.
- Monitor Fees Payable by clients for services provided by practitioners.
- And perform any other functions that are ancillary to the objectives of the council.
