Consumer Reports: Synthetic hair braiding may pose cancer risk

By: Roberta Gayode Modin

A recent investigation by Consumer Reports, an American nonprofit organisation, has revealed the presence of cancer-causing chemicals in several popular hair brands, including Darling.

In a viral video, James Roger, Director of Project Safety at Consumer Reports, explained that the beauty products market is largely unregulated, and some harmful chemicals used in their production are not listed on the packaging, putting consumers at risk.

“Braids are often worn for many weeks, and prolonged, repeated exposure increases your risk,” Roger said.

He also advised consumers to take breaks from using these products to reduce their risk of cancer.

According to Consumer Reports, only two brands—Sensationnel and Magic Fingers—out of ten popular hair brands challenged the findings.

“We unequivocally stand by the safety of Sensationnel products, and our company urges consumers to continue to confidently use Sensationnel products,” Sensationnel stated.

“We strongly stand by the safety of our products and the quality materials used to make them,” Magic Fingers said in response to the findings.

However, none of the brands responded when asked if they conduct market testing for lead, volatile organic compounds, and other harmful substances in their products.

The research has sparked debate, leaving many people divided. For many Africans and Black communities worldwide, braids are more than just a hairstyle—they are a cultural identity and a convenient, protective styling option. The findings may come as bad news to those who rely heavily on synthetic braiding hair for everyday styling.
